Berwick Hills Baptist Church has a long and varied history stretching back to 1884 when the Newport Road Baptist Church in Middlesbrough established an outreach Mission at North Ormesby.
During 1884 services began in the Mission room which was located over a stable at the bottom of High Street, North Ormesby and in May of that year the Sunday School was opened. This rather cramped building soon proved to be unsuitable and as the work grew it became necessary to look for larger accommodation.
In November 1890 the Newport Road Church authorized the Trustees of North Ormesby Mission to proceed with the purchase of a property at the corner of Smeaton Street and Lower High Street from the Wesleyan Methodists. Once enlarged this became the centre of the Mission's outreach for over 60 years.
In July 1953 it was agreed that the Mission should become a Baptist Church independent of the mother church which had moved to Southfield Road after a merger with other Baptist Churches in Middlesbrough. A special service was held for the Constitution of the Church and the Dedication of Foundation members on Thursday 3 December 1953 with Mr Hugh Clark as Lay Pastor.
As the town developed and new housing estates were built the possibility of the North Ormesby Mission extending its work to Berwick Hills on the 'outskirts of Middlesbrough' was discussed in 1952.
By the next year, however, the vision had changed and the 'Transfer of the Church' to a site on Graygarth Road, Berwick Hills was being considered. While difficulties with the Town Clerk and Planning Permission caused delay a Sunday School work was established at the home of Mrs Smith on Langridge Crescent. Numbers grew rapidly from 36 attending on June 16th to between 90 and 120 in October when the Sunday School was meeting at the Westerdale Road School
